How to Recycle
Recycling is the process of taking things that would normally end up in the trash and turning them into something new. Recycling can help your neighbourhood and the world around you.
How to Recycle Materials in Steps
The three steps below are all part of recycling. Together, they make a loop, which is represented by the recycling symbol.
Step 1: Get and process the data
There are many ways to collect recyclables, such as curbside pickup, drop-off centres, and programmes that require a deposit or give money back.
After being picked up, recyclables are taken to a facility where they are sorted, cleaned, and turned into materials that can be used to make things. Recyclables are bought and sold just like raw materials, and their prices go up and down based on supply and demand in the US and around the world.
Step 2: Manufacturing
More and more of the things we buy today are made with recycled materials. Some common household items that are made with recycled materials are:
- The paper towels and newspapers
- Aluminium, plastic, and glass bottles are used to hold soft drinks.
- Steel cans
- Plastic bottles for laundry detergent
Recycled materials are also used in new ways, like putting recycled glass in asphalt to pave roads or using recycled plastic to make carpeting and park benches.
Step 3: Buy new products made from materials that have already been used
When you buy new things made from recycled materials, you help close the recycling loop. Recycled materials are used in a lot of different products. Look for the following when you go shopping:
- Things that can be recycled easily
- Products made with recycled materials
Here are a few of the words:
Product made with recycled materials: The product was made with recycled materials that came from a recycling programme or from waste that was saved during the normal manufacturing process. Sometimes, the label will say how much of the item was made from recycled materials.
Post-consumer content is very similar to recycled content, but the material comes only from recyclables collected from consumers or businesses through a recycling programme.
Recyclable product: A product that can be collected, sorted, and made into something new after it has been used. Not all of these products are made from recycled materials. Don’t forget that your community may not collect all types of recyclables, so check with your local recycling programme before you buy.
Some common items that can be made with recycled materials are:
- Aluminium cans
- Car bumpers
- Boxes for cereal
- Comic strips
- Egg cartons
- Glass containers
- Laundry detergent bottles
- Hand towels
- Steel things
- Trash bags
